Mari Story

Mari Research and Development is a not-for-profit civil society organization operating in northeast Syria. It was established in 2019 and registered in Canada in 2020. In 2018, a group of educated, dynamic, and like-minded youth was working in development. The sector got together to establish an organization for addressing the most urgent and pressing, needs of people in Syria. MRD seeks to build a stable and just society where peace and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms prevail. In order to promote cohesive and tolerant societies where justice and equality prevail, we seek to promote human rights and to make them the primary and main drivers of the diverse societies which we target through our work.

Our Mission

We committed to empowering society through civic engagement, promoting democracy, and supporting and developing local communities with a focus on human integrity at the center of our work. We endeavors to unleash the potential of disadvantaged working communities to succeed in life through supplying education, specialized childcare, healthcare, and livelihood skills.

Our Approach

We strive to support institution-building by empowering civil society is flourishing in Deir Ezzour and other areas of Eastern Syria. We enhance the ability of local leaders to work with women and youth, promoting the protection of civil and human rights for all Syrians, and ultimately fosters economic development and opportunities for all Syrians. In our work, we adopt a human rights-based approach to women’s rights and gender equality, We strongly believe that democracy cannot be achieved without gender and equality justice. 

How do we work

We work closely together in order to provide holistic, comprehensive support to local communities through active civic engagement and by providing sustainable services. Mari operates with institutionalized, yet dynamic processes that seek out unique and creative initiatives. Its work is supported through various international partnerships with non-profit organizations and donor agencies. Mari encourages the development of its staff as well as the communities it serves. Mari currently employs thirty employees who are qualified Syrians across a wide spectrum of professional fields. As of December 2020, Mari  implemented projects that focused primarily on the community’s awareness, civic engagement, and gender equality. We aims at expanding these activities by investing in facilities and educational institutions to services that are inclusive of all ethnic groups residing in the area.
